December is not a quiet month in the valley. Tasting rooms run holiday releases and club pickups, restaurants book out, and event spaces host the corporate dinners and weddings that carry a whole quarter. Every one of those guests forms an impression in the eight seconds between the parking area and the door — and after four o’clock in December, that impression is made entirely by lighting.
Commercial holiday lighting is a different job from residential. The run times are longer, the access is harder, the liability is real, and nobody can afford a dark facade on the night of an event. We quote commercial and winery work per property because scale, access and hours vary far too much for a package price to mean anything.
What we light on a hospitality property
- Arrival sequence. The drive in, the parking area edge, the path to the door. This is the part guests photograph and the part that decides whether an evening feels considered.
- Building rooflines and architectural features. Warm white C9 along the primary rooflines, with arches, colonnades and porticos picked out where the architecture deserves it.
- Mature trees and olive groves. Trunk wraps and canopy lighting. On valley properties this is usually the highest-impact element per dollar — a lit oak or olive reads from the road in a way a roofline cannot.
- Terraces, patios and event lawns. Bistro and catenary runs over outdoor dining and event space, hung from proper anchor points rather than whatever is nearby.
- Entry doors, wreaths and garland. The detail work that photographs at close range and ends up in guest posts.
- Retail and window frontage. For downtown Napa, Yountville and the Sonoma plaza — where foot traffic and window appeal decide the evening.

The Valley Bright Install, commercial version
- 1. Site walk with whoever runs the season. Usually the tasting room or events manager, not the owner. We need the event calendar before the design, because the install date has to clear your first booking with room to spare.
- 2. Design and firm written quote. Scope, run times, timer strategy and takedown window, priced per property. No allowances.
- 3. Custom cut and bench-tested. Every run is built and powered up before it reaches your site. Commercial jobs are where a failed run costs the most, so nothing arrives untested.
- 4. Installation outside business hours where needed. Tasting rooms do not want ladders in the arrival path at eleven in the morning. Early starts and post-close installs are normal for us.
- 5. In-season priority response. Commercial properties get priority on service calls through December, because a dark run before an event is a different problem than a dark run on a house.
- 6. January takedown and storage. Scheduled around your calendar, everything labeled and stored.
Timers, run times and what December actually costs to run
Residential displays run dusk to late evening. Hospitality properties often need more: earlier on for winter dusk at half past four, later off for events, and sometimes different schedules for different zones — arrival lighting on a long schedule, terrace lighting only on event nights.
We set that up with photocell and programmable timers by zone rather than one switch for everything. On running cost, the arithmetic is reassuring: commercial-grade C9 LED bulbs draw roughly a watt each, so even a large property with several thousand bulbs typically runs for a few tens of dollars across the whole season. The lighting is not the expensive part of December.
Fire-wise on commercial properties
Insurers and property managers in Napa and Sonoma ask harder questions about exterior electrical than they used to, and rightly. What we do as standard:
- Loads calculated per circuit before install, with exterior-rated GFCI protection — never daisy-chained domestic extension cords across a property.
- LED throughout. Cool-running, low-draw, and a fraction of the load of the incandescent sets still sitting in some property storerooms.
- Sealed, drip-looped connections at every junction, so winter rain does not trip a breaker mid-event.
- Full removal in January. Nothing is left in place to degrade in defensible space through the following fire season.
How we protect your home
- We never walk clay or concrete tile roofs. Tile cracks under body weight, so we work entirely from ladders around the perimeter — same result, no risk to your roof. These homes are a big part of our work.
- We won’t fasten into historic masonry, stone or heritage fabric. On older valley buildings we design around the structure, not into it.
- We won’t install lighting a property’s own electrical can’t carry. If a panel needs work first, we say so and stop there — that is an electrician’s job, not ours.
- We won’t take an install date that leaves no buffer before your first December event.
- We won’t quote a commercial property without walking it. Access and power decide the price, and neither shows up in an aerial photo.
What commercial and winery lighting costs
The drivers are linear footage, height and access, tree count, whether terrace or event lighting is included, and how long the display runs. A tasting-room frontage and a full estate arrival sequence are different orders of magnitude.
| Property type | Typical seasonal range | Usually includes |
|---|---|---|
| Small retail or restaurant frontage | $1,200 – $3,000 | Primary roofline, entry, window frontage, timers |
| Tasting room and arrival area | $3,000 – $8,000 | Rooflines, entry, drive and path lighting, several wrapped trees |
| Winery estate with event space | $8,000 – $25,000+ | Full arrival sequence, buildings, groves, terrace and event-lawn lighting, zoned timers |
| Multi-building hospitality property | Quoted per property | Phased install around the events calendar, priority in-season service |
These are typical ranges for Napa Valley properties, not a quote or an offer. Your firm price comes after we look at the property.
Every commercial quote includes design, the lighting itself, installation, in-season priority service and January takedown with storage. There is no separate removal charge.
