St. Helena is where the valley gets serious about its architecture. Main Street is a protected historic core of stone and brick storefronts, the residential streets behind it hold some of the best-kept Victorians in the county, and once you are out on Spring Mountain Road or heading up toward Howell Mountain the properties become estates with long approaches and mature groves.

Three different kinds of job, and the estate work in particular is unlike anything down valley — the building is often the smallest part of the display.

What we do here

How up-valley properties differ

  • The approach matters more than the roof. On a property set two hundred yards back behind an olive allée, nobody sees the roofline until they are almost at the door. The drive, the gateposts, the allée and the specimen trees carry the display. We design these from the road inward.
  • Mature trees are the main event. Olive, valley oak and sycamore, often decades old. Trunk wraps and lower canopy work on a mature olive produce more effect than any amount of roof run, and they photograph extraordinarily well.
  • Stone and heritage fabric. A lot of St. Helena building stock is stone or historic masonry. Nothing gets fastened into it. We use gutter lines, existing structure, tension runs and freestanding elements.
  • Long power runs. Estate displays routinely need power a long way from the house. Circuits get planned properly with exterior-rated protection rather than a chain of extension cords down a driveway.
  • Main Street commercial. The historic storefronts trade heavily through December. Frontage and window lighting, installed outside opening hours, designed to sit within the town’s historic character rather than fight it.

Fire-wise up valley

Up-valley owners think about this harder than anyone, and they should — these are the properties with real defensible-space plans. What we do as standard fits inside those plans rather than working against them:

  • Commercial LED throughout, drawing about a watt per bulb and running cool.
  • Loads calculated against the circuit, exterior-rated GFCI protection, no daisy-chained domestic cord runs across a property.
  • Sealed, drip-looped connections at every junction.
  • Complete removal in January — nothing left in trees or eaves to degrade through the dry season.

Common questions

Do you charge extra to come up valley?
No. St. Helena is the same pricing as the city of Napa. Estate work costs more because it is a bigger job, not because of the drive.
My house is stone. Can you light it without drilling?
Yes, and we would not drill it in any case. Nothing is fastened into any building we work on. On stone and historic fabric we use gutter lines, existing structure, tension runs and landscape-led design.
Can you light a long driveway or an olive allée?
Yes, and on most estates it is the best-value part of the whole display. An allée in warm white is the single most striking thing we install.
We have a defensible-space plan. Does holiday lighting conflict with it?
It should not, and ours is built not to. Low-draw LED, properly protected circuits, sealed connections, and complete removal in January so nothing sits in the landscape through fire season.
How far in advance should an estate book?
Late summer for estates. These are multi-day installs with power planning, and the good December dates are gone by early October.
Do you work on Spring Mountain and Howell Mountain?
Yes. Access and power are the two things we assess carefully on mountain properties, and we will be honest at the walkthrough about anything we cannot reach safely.
Is takedown included on estate work?
Yes, on every install. Scheduled around your calendar in January, everything labeled and stored.
Can you match what a neighbor has?
Often, though we would rather design for your property than copy. Bring a photo to the walkthrough and we will tell you what carries across and what will not.
